The Value of a Veteran

Military transition refers to the process of service members moving from military to civilian life, often involving new employment. Hiring veterans or military spouses offers benefits like strong work ethic, adaptability, and leadership skills, as they bring valuable experiences from their time in service or association with those who serve abroad.

For resumes, veterans should translate military terms into civilian language, focus on relevant skills, and avoid excessive jargon or acronyms and we cover these areas during our session.

Employers can locate veterans and military spouses through veteran-focused job boards, hiring events, and partnerships with military support organizations we will touch on as well.

Additionally, programs like the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) offer guidelines and support to employers in hiring and supporting reservists and guard members, ensuring their employment rights are protected during service commitments.

We hope you can join us as we together discuss this critical aspect of America's workforce as we seek to broaden our understanding of military-to-civilian transition.

As a SHRM Veterans Ambassador, Bernie has been deeply involved in SHRM's Veterans Certificate-at-Work pilot and revision projects. Additionally, he has held roles such as HR Florida’s Director of College Relations, HR Tampa’s Diversity Director, and Workforce Readiness Director in recent years.
